In order to satisfy the demand to a more strict position information, the common solution is to add incremental rotary encoder to BLDC motor. Generally speaking, in addition to Hall effect sensor, incremental encoder will also be added into the same control feedback loop system, wherein, Hall effect sensor is used for motor commutation, while encoder is used to trace the position, revolution, speed and direction more accurately. Since Hall effect sensor can only provide new position information when each Hall state changes, its precision can only reach six states of every electrical circulation. However, as to the bipolar motor, it only has six states for each mechanical circulation. Compared with the incremental encoder which can provide the resolution ratio, it is obvious that the two are required.
The brushless DC motor is a core element in the Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV) applications. The quality of the electric motor can decide the performance of the AGV. Brushless DC motor braking is usually fast braking by motor itself. There are two simple methods. One is energy consumption braking, the other is short connection braking. Energy consumption braking consumes the motor's kinetic energy on the external braking resistance, and short connection braking consumes the motor's kinetic energy on the motor's stator winding. Obviously, energy consumption braking is more beneficial to reduce motor heating. However, the short brake does not need any hardware modification. Simple and convenient is its outstanding advantage, so it focuses on the short brake.
So can a BLDC motors be equipped with a brake? The answer is of course. Actually, the structure of BLDC motor is similar to that of many motors, which is composed of stator and rotor, it only replaces physical carbon brush with digital signal control. The principle of brake device is to clamp the stator with the lining and then stop the stator, thus realizing braking. BLDC motor is no exception. However, as the BLDC motor has a small body size, its brake devices are generally installed outside the motor. Some motors with larger body sizes, such as the three-phase asynchronous motor, install the brake device inside the motor, so it can't be distinguished clearly whether it's installed with a brake device.

The BLDC motor applied in the electric bicycle is generally made into disc motor and installed in the hub of the wheel. The hub is connected by spoke and rim, which directly drives wheel rotation.
